The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Friday announced the indefinite postponement of the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
This announcement was made by WAEC Head of National Office, Mr. Patrick Ehidiamen Areghan, on Friday.
He said that the reason for the postponement of this examination, was due to the sudden outbreak of the deadly virus, known as Coronavirus, or Cov-19.

However, the examination was scheduled to commence on April 6, 2020, meanwhile, students has already begun the preparation as many parents has already enrolled their children to evening extra-classes, although, as things may be, the viral outbreak became a challenge, as no children should be exposed to such risk, thus, it has been advised that all students must remain indoors throughout this period.
In his own words, he said, and I quote: “This is as a result of the impact of the novel and deadly coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) and the serious implications it has for the conduct of the WASSCE for school candidates, 2020, coupled with the anxieties it has generated among the populace.
He also stated that, this decision to postpone the WASSCE is a demonstration of the organisation’s concern and support for the various protocols being put in place by the Federal and State Governments of Nigeria and the governments of the other member countries to check the spread of the disease.
Furthermore, he concluded that the timetable for the examination had been suspended and would be reviewed once the health situation improves.
